Distribution: This species occurs throughout the Mississippi River drainage, from western Pennsylvania and New York to Michigan and Minnesota. Also, known to occur in the Tennessee and Cumberland River systems, and along the Gulf Coast. In Canada, it is known from Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair drainages in southern Ontario. Occurs in rivers in northeastern and southeastern Oklahoma.

Life History and Ecology: This species is most common in medium sized rivers in substrate of fine gravel mixed with sand and can establish viable populations in lakes. Long-term brooder that reportedly specializes on freshwater drum as hosts. Opportunistic life history strategy.
