Distribution: This species occurs throughout most of the central and lower Mississippi River drainage, as far north as Indiana and west through Iowa and Missouri. Found in ponds and sluggish streams throughout most of Oklahoma.

Life History and Ecology: This species typically inhabits quiet or slow-moving shallow waters of sloughs, ponds, ditches, and meandering streams. Thought to be able to survive temporary stream drying by burrowing deeply in the sediment. Long-term brooder that reportedly uses golden shiner minnows as a host. Periodic life history strategy.
