Distribution: This species occurs throughout the Mississippi River drainage. It occurs in the Great Lakes region (including southern Ontario), Mobile Basin, and Gulf Coasts west to the Rio Grande of Texas and Mexico. In Oklahoma it is known from the Arkansas River system (Caney, Verdigris, Neosho, and Illinois Rivers) in northeastern Oklahoma and the Red River system (Washita, Blue, Boggy, Kiamichi and Little Rivers) in southeastern Oklahoma.

Life History and Ecology: This species occurs in medium sized to large rivers in sand or mud substrate, and typically in moderate current, but can also adapt to lake environments. Long-term brooder that reportedly specializes on freshwater drum as hosts. Opportunistic life history strategy.
