Distribution: This species is widespread throughout the Mississippi River drainage as far north as southern Canada. It has expanded its range in the southern and southeastern US.  Widespread in Oklahoma.

Life History and Ecology: Typically occurs in shallow areas of lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, as well as small to large rivers, where it inhabits mud, sand, or fine gravel. Long-term brooder that attracts reported sunfish hosts with a mantle lure. Opportunistic life history strategy.
