Distribution: Occurs throughout the Mississippi River basin from Indiana and Michigan west to South Dakota and southeastern Minnesota. Common in the southern US in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Widespread in eastern Oklahoma.

Life History and Ecology: This species generally occurs in small streams, in shallow portions of lakes and ponds, in sloughs, and in quiet waters of larger rivers in mud or sand substrate, typically in less than 2 feet of water. The species adapts well to newly created ponds and channels. Long-term brooder that attracts sunfish and bass hosts with a mantle lure. Periodic life history strategy.
