Distribution: Widespread throughout the Mississippi River drainage. Occurs in Eastern and Texas Gulf drainages from the Ochlockonee River west to the Rio Grande and into northeastern Mexico. Known from the Arkansas River system (Caney, Verdigris, Neosho, and Poteau Rivers) in northeastern Oklahoma and in the Red River system (Boggy, Kiamichi, and Little Rivers) in southeastern Oklahoma.

Life History and Ecology: Normally a large river species, living in the main channel, but can also become established in medium and even small rivers. Also occurs in overbank areas of reservoirs. Can occur in very deep water (up to 50 feet). Long-term brooder that is a host generalist and uses broadcasting to spread glochidia. Equilibrium life history strategy. Widespread in eastern Oklahoma streams and rivers where it is often the dominant species in a mussel bed.
