Distribution: Distributed throughout the entire Mississippi River drainage from the St. Lawrence River and its tributaries south to northern Louisiana and west to the tributaries of the Red River in Oklahoma. In Oklahoma, occurs in the Arkansas River system (Neosho, Illinois, and Poteau rivers), and in the Little River in the Red River system. Historical records from the Kiamichi River.

Life History and Ecology: Most often found in firm coarse sand and gravel substrate and moderately strong current. Short-term brooder that reportedly infects and metamorphoses on fishes that include gizzard shad, flathead catfish, white crappie, black crappie, and yellow perch.
