Distribution: From the gulf coastal plain in Florida west to Texas and northward into the Mississippi River drainage. Also found in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River system, Red River of the North, Saskatchewan River, and Lake Winnipeg. Widespread in eastern Oklahoma.

Life History and Ecology: Occurs in a variety of habitats including small streams to large rivers and reservoirs and in a variety of substrates. Widespread in eastern Oklahoma streams and rivers where it is often the dominant species in a mussel bed. Short-term brooder that is likely a host generalist and uses broadcasting to spread glochidia. Equilibrium life history strategy.
